DIVE 12 On Saturday evening in 1666 the fire started in the bakery of Thomas Farynor, who was a baker of the King Charles II. This fire was one of the worst fires in the history of London. First people didn't understand how serious the situation was because fires were rather often in the city at that time. And they didn't say anything about it to their king. Only on Sunday in the afternoon people understood the situation and informed the king. A strong wind was blowing those days and the fire spread very quickly. It reached the river Thames and the river warehouses exploded like bombs. The fire continued from Sunday to Wednesday. 13, 200 houses were burnt, 87 churches were destroyed. The greatest fire was at St. Paul's Cathedral. Most people ran away, and only six people died in the Great Fire of London. By Wednesday night the fire was put out. But this fire did London good. The old houses were burnt and after the fire people built a new city.
